Originally thought to be by Curtis Jere. After doing some research we still were unable to identify the artist. It for sure is in the style of Curtis in look, time frame created and materials used.

What we did learn…

Material:

• Base: raw quartz / quartzite (natural fracture faces, iron staining)

• Figure: cast bronze with an intentional green patina

• Bronze element is pinned/drilled directly into the stone, not mounted on a formal plinth.

• Stylized, elongated bird in flight (possibly a dove or abstract avian form)

• Expressive, slightly mid-century modern / studio modern feel

• Not academic realism, not folk art — very much studio sculpture

The signature, revisited

Looking at the signature in context with the sculpture:

• The marking now reads much more plausibly as “© / Leroy” or “© J. Leroy”

• The spiral mark is consistent with a personal artist’s mark, not a foundry stamp

• The copyright symbol strongly suggests post-1950, likely 1960s–1980s

What this rules out

• ❌ Not a mass-produced decor object

• ❌ Not a known major modernist (e.g., Calder, Chillida, etc.)

• ❌ Not Native American or ancient-inspired artifact (sometimes misattributed with stone/bronze combos)

Most likely attribution (best-fit conclusion)

This piece is almost certainly by a regional American studio sculptor, active mid-to-late 20th century, using:

• Bronze + natural stone

• Abstracted animal forms

• Hand-incised signature
